TYPE OF SCHEME: Assisted Living and Care
LOCATION: Newcastle-Upon-Tyne
Remodelling of an existing, redundant, poorly occupied building in Walker, Newcastle, providing thirty-one apartments within a later living and care assisted facility for RL provider, YHN. The original three-storey building had a series of poor bedsit sized rooms and the internal spaces were remodelled to provide one and two bed apartments with living accommodation designed to accessible space standards. The exterior façade of the original building was uplifted with a new roof and upgrades to the building envelope to elevate the overall look and feel A new build extension provided a new entrance and communal support facilities, with additional apartments provided to the upper floor levels.
As well as delivering apartments with a modern boutique-feel internal specification, internal alterations gave the communal areas a new lease of life to support the interests of residents. The bright and spacious communal area, with lounge and kitchen encourages frequent interaction between residents as well as flexible use for activities. The space opens up on to the newly landscaped external areas for a more outside-in approach designed to encourage residents to treat the gardens as their own.
