TYPE OF SCHEME: Assisted Living and Care

LOCATION: County Durham

Remodelling of an existing, redundant 1960′s sheltered housing building in County Durham, provided twenty-one apartments within a later living and care assisted facility for RL provider, Karbon. The apartments were formed by working with the existing structure to maximise the available budget. The internal spaces within the apartments provide accessible movement and layouts to meet modern living standards. The internal communal spaces were designed to reflect a ‘boutique’ hotel aesthetic to break the institutional feel of comparative care buildings.

The project was awarded the Constructing Excellence North East Award for Innovation, covering the standard and quality of the contemporary design through the innovative use of the procurement path and budget. The project was also shortlisted for the RICS Awards for Design & Innovation.
