The conversion of a redundant 1960′s sheltered housing block into an independent living scheme for the over 55s. The project created a new award winning contemporary landmark building which raises the standard of social housing for the elderly. Working in partnership with Southdale and Derwentside Homes the project transformed an unsightly building into a state of the art apartment scheme for the elderly. The practice provided a holistic approach to the scheme with the contemporary themes running through the exterior, interior and landscaping design.
The scheme was awarded the Constructing Excellence North east award for Innovation. The award was given for the standard and quality of the contemporary design achieved through the innovative use of the procurement path and budget. The scheme was set up to allow the practice to maximise the impact of its design skills by targeting the budget to high impact design features, materials, fixtures and fittings. Value was maximised through the combined use of the contractor and client procurement agreements. The end product has the feel of a high quality private apartment or a contemporary hotel. The scheme was completed on a standard RSL budget and was completed in September 2010.
