New Assisted Living Schemes for Your Homes Newcastle

Delivering a fresh approach to social housing has long-been a specialist area for our team.  The housing sector has suffered when it comes to developing projects that can work to a specific budget but also provide new and interesting ideas for residential housing.  Previous schemes such as Castle Court and Shield Court have demonstrated our commitment to employ a more holistic approach to social housing.  We do this by creating buildings that work for the end-user through the interior specification and architectural design.

Our approach is effective and our award-winning previous projects form a rounded and extensive portfolio of assisted living schemes which we are always looking to extend.

In February 2017, work commenced on two assisted living projects designed by Blake Hopkinson on behalf of frequent partner, Your Homes Newcastle and in collaboration with building contractor, Engie.  The two schemes consisted of complete refurbishments and partial extensions to existing buildings with the objective of bringing both buildings up to the modern standards expected of assisted living facilities.

Milecastle in Walker was transformed over a 12-month construction period from unsuitable bedsit-style accommodation to create 31 one and two-bedroom apartments. The assisted living facility was extensively refurbished, with new roof and upgrades to the building envelope to elevate the look and feel of the external building.

A new extension was also constructed to create a more modern entrance for residents.  The former narrow entrance was unsuitable for wheelchairs users given the tight space and the new extension supports a more welcoming entrance hall for residents and visitors.  The advantage of the new extension was the addition of extra space for a number of new apartments as part of the construction.

As well as delivering modern apartments with a boutique-feel internal design, the internal alterations created a bright and spacious communal area with lounge and kitchen to support frequent interaction between residents.  The space opens up on to the newly landscaped external areas for a more outside-in approach to encourage residents treat the gardens as their own.

Similar to Milecastle, Bamburgh House was a complete refurbishment and extension to the existing assisted living facility in Westerhope on behalf of Your Homes Newcastle and building contractor, Engie.  31 one and two-bedroom apartments were created with the new extension forming a new entranceway and additional apartments to complete the main building.  With new communal spaces and a contemporary apartment interiors, Bamburgh House and Milecastle are now fit for purpose assisted living facilities with the modern living environment designed to encourage independent living for longer.

Both Milecastle and Bamburgh House are fully occupied following years of dwindling occupancy rates.  The repurposed buildings have been given a new lease of life for the next generation of residents.

We are proud to once again see the approach taken by the Blake Hopkinson team result in a final scheme which has delivered on its brief and exceeded the expectations of residents.  With new assisted living projects underway throughout the North East, we are always looking to bring our holistic design approach to clients interested in investing in new ways to create high quality residential projects.
